Burger King is an American global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants Burger King was founded in 1953 in Jacksonville, Florida, as Insta-Burger King by Keith J. Kramer and his wife’s uncle, Matthew Burns. Their first stores were centered on a piece of equipment known as the Insta-Broiler, which was very effective at cooking burgers. It proved so successful that, as they grew through franchising, they required all of their franchises to carry the device. When the company was started it was named as Insta-Burger King and that was a Florida based restaurant. But after falling into financial crisis its two Miami-based franchisees, David Edgerton and James McLamore, purchased the company and renamed it Burger King.
At the end of the fiscal year 2013 Burger king reported it had over 13,000 outlets in 79 countries. Those of 66% are in United States and 99% are privately owned.
One last fast fact that might interest you, the Whopper was not always on the menu. The Whopper was the creation of James McLamore in 1957. It sold for 37 cents. He was one of the two men who brought Insta-Burger King to Miami and eventually became the co-founder of the Burger King.
